Botox ® for Chronic Pain

Most of us have heard of Botox ® for cosmetic use, however, Botox ® has been found to be quite effective in the treatment of chronic pain. It can be administered by physicians to control chronic pain; allowing patients to live more comfortable, happier and healthier lives.

Botox ® relaxes the muscle or muscle groups, which are associated with chronic pain. It is especially beneficially in the treatment of migraine and migraine prevention and lasts approximately three months. The use of Botox ® therapy for migraines greatly reduces the frequency, severity and amount of medication required for each patient. Botox ® relaxes the muscles and interrupts the muscle contractions, which are responsible for sending erratic, nerve firing and blood vessel spasms characteristic of migraine headaches.

Some examples of health-related conditions that can be treated by Botox ® injections include:

  • Headaches
  • Chronic Migraines
  • Temporomandibular (TMJ) Disorders

How Botox ® is Administered

Botox ® is injected directly into specific trigger points and migraine sites. The treatment takes approximately 10-15 minutes and patients can return to work immediately after their treatment. Within 3-4 days after the procedure, patients will start to notice the difference. Their migraine symptoms become less severe while frequency of experiencing them decreases. These benefits last approximately 3 months.

Is Botox ® covered by an Extended Medical Insurance Plan?

As plans vary, it is best to check with your service provider. However, most extended medical insurance plans in Canada will cover the cost of Botox ® as therapy medication
