What is IV Iron Therapy?

Intravenous (IV) iron therapy delivers iron directly into the bloodstream. This method allows for rapid absorption and helps replenish iron levels faster than oral supplements, especially in cases where:

  • Oral iron causes side effects like nausea or constipation.
  • Medical conditions impair iron absorption.
  • Immediate improvement in iron levels is needed due to severe deficiency.

Preparing For Your Iron Infusion

Stay well hydrated and eat before your appointment to help your body prepare for the infusion. You may also want to bring snacks and a drink for added comfort during the procedure, which typically lasts one to two hours.

Due to space limitations and infection control polices, family members may not always be allowed to accompany you. Most patients can drive themselves to and from their appointment and resume work or daily activities afterward.

How It Works:

  1. Evaluation: A healthcare provider will assess iron levels with a blood test to determine if IV therapy is suitable.
  2. Infusion Process:
    • The procedure takes approximately one hour, depending on the iron preparation.
    • During the infusion, iron is administered through a small IV in the arm or hand.
    • After the infusion, there will be an observation period of 30 minutes to monitor for any potential side effects.
  3. Post-Treatment:  After the observation period, most individuals can return to regular activities.

Key Benefits of IV Iron Therapy

  • Rapid Results: Faster correction of iron deficiency compared to oral supplements.
  • Fewer Gastrointestinal Side Effects: Avoid discomfort often associated with oral iron.
  • Targeted Treatment: Allows for precise dosing based on individual needs.
